How to Remove the Drive Belt From a John Deere 212

The John Deere 212 is an older lawn tractor model. It is equipped with John Deere's trademark yellow mowing deck. The deck hangs suspended from the mower via four linkage rods. The deck gets its power from the drive belt. The drive belt spins the pulleys on the deck because it wraps around the driveshaft pulley coming out of the bottom of the mower. You must replace the belt if it starts to slip on the pulleys.

Instructions

    • 1

Disengage the PTO lever that controls the movement of the PTO pulley mounted to the John Deere 212 engine driveshaft. When you disengage the pulley, the pulley stops spinning and the belt releases tension. You must do this before you can take the belt off.

    • 2

Lower the mower deck to its lowest position to increase clearance between the mower deck and the bottom of the 212 mower tractor.

    • 3

Make note of the belt diagram on the top of the mower deck. If the diagram is missing, draw your own. Denote how the belt routes around the pulleys on the deck.

    • 4

Pull the old belt off the pulleys and place the new belt onto the pulleys. Refer to the diagram on the deck or the one you drew to ensure proper belt routing.

    • 5

Pull the belt forward to the front of the mower, then slide the belt over the PTO pulley.

    • 6

Engage the PTO pulley lever to turn on the mower blades before you begin to mow.
