How to Replace the Belts on the Deck of a John Deere

Traditional front-wheel steered, rear-wheel drive John Deere lawn tractors equipped with a mowing deck utilize a drive belt that connects the PTO pulley mounted under the Deere's engine with the spindle and idler pulleys mounted on the mower deck. When you engage the PTO lever, it removes slack in the drive belt and forces the blades to spin. When the belt wears out, you must replace it to keep your Deere tractor performing properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your John Deere lawn tractor on stable flat ground, set the parking brake and disengage the PTO lever on the rear fender. Lift the mower deck to its highest position.

    • 2

Place a wooden board under the front, right and left sides of the mower deck and then lower the deck onto the boards. This takes tension off the suspension rods.

    • 3

Pull the cotter pins out of the rod pins that hold the suspension rods onto the lawn tractor, pull the washers off the rod pins and then slide the suspension rods away from the rod pins.

    • 4

Locate the PTO pulley by looking under the front of the lawn tractor. Grip the belt on the pulley and then pull the belt off the pulley.

    • 5

Slide the deck out from under your John Deere, make a diagram of the belt routing on the deck and then pull the belt off the spindle and idler pulleys.

    • 6

Place the new belt onto the spindle and idler pulleys. Follow your diagram to ensure you mount the belt correctly.

    • 7

Slide the deck under the lawn tractor and then place the drive belt over the PTO pulley under the mower's engine.

    • 8

Slide the suspension rods onto the rod pins. Slide the washers onto the rod pins and then slide the cotter pins though the holes in the rod pins.

    • 9

Lift the deck up and remove the wooden blocks.
