How to Replace the Clutch in a John Deere 5205 PTO

The clutch in your John Deere 5205 PTO--Power TakeOff--is responsible for converting power to the blades in order to provide the cutting action needed to trim your lawn. A failed PTO clutch will result in an unusable mower. You can replace your John Deere 5205 PTO clutch without the help of a professional, even if you have no experience with troubleshooting and fixing John Deere lawn care devices.

Instructions

    • 1

Park and turn off the John Deere 5205 mower. Open the front hood over the Briggs & Stratton engine.

    • 2

Find the flywheel. The flywheel is the circular metal device covered with an iron shroud. Visible bolts are on the shroud's surface, and it can be seen at the top rear of the engine assembly. Remove the bolts on the shroud with a socket wrench and set the shroud aside.

    • 3

Position your flywheel pulley over the flywheel so the two pulley arms lower down against the outside of the John Deere flywheel. Tighten the pulley's center bolt until the pressure allows the flywheel to come free.

    • 4

Remove the oil pan from the bottom of the engine, beneath where the flywheel was removed. Use your socket wrench to remove its screws and then pry off the pan. This reveals the bottom of the clutch shaft.

    • 5

Remove the bolts along the John Deere's clutch shaft using your socket wrench.

    • 6

Find the top of the clutch shaft, which can be seen directly under where the flywheel once sat. Hit the center of the clutch shaft here using a rubber mallet. This will dislodge the shaft.

    • 7

Slide the replacement John Deere 5205 PTO clutch shaft into the spot vacated by the old shaft.

    • 8

Reverse your disassembly steps to reassemble your John Deere 5205 PTO engine.
