How to Check Fluid in a Craftsman Hydro Transmission

Craftsman riding lawn mowers use a hydrostatic transmission to help the motor and other controls work properly. If you notice that the control lever or other controls in the mower start to stick or malfunction, there could be a problem with your transmission. First make sure you have enough hydro transmission fluid from the real axle of your mower.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Craftsman lawn mower. Lower yourself behind the rear axle of the mower.

    • 2

Locate the transmission cover, which is a large box on the rear axle.

    • 3

Remove the bolt on the transmission cover with an adjustable wrench. Lift and remove the cover.

    • 4

Insert a measuring scale stick or popsicle stick into the tank's opening on the top.

    • 5

Pull out the stick to see how much oil is on it. The oil should range within 1 inch from the top of the stick.

    • 6

Place a funnel over the hole, and add transmission fluid if it is low. Replace the transmission cover, and reinsert the bolt into the cover.
