Look at the area where you want to lay sod and then make a sketch of it. Draw the perimeter of the area.
Measure the length and width of the area with a tape measure. Record the measurements in feet on the sketch pad.
Multiply the length by the width to calculate the total square footage and then multiply the result by 9.
For example, if you have a yard that is 30 feet wide and 40 feet long, you should multiply the two to calculate the total square footage,1,200 square feet. Divide 1,200 square feet by 9 to calculate the total yardage, 133 yards. You need to order 133 yards of sod to cover the yard.
Find sod retailers, products and services in your telephone book or online. Call any of the numbers you find interesting. Tell whoever answers the phone that you need to order 133 yards of sod. Give the clerk your name and delivery address so she can figure in the delivery charge. Sod retailers charge a delivery fee to cover the gas and labor expenses of the driver. Ask the clerk how much the sod will cost, including the delivery fee and tax. Ask if you need to pay over the phone with a credit card or if you can pay on delivery. Follow the payment instructions.
Tell the retailer that you want the sod delivered early in the morning. Sod should be laid in the early morning to minimize root stress caused by hot midday temperatures evaporating the moisture out of the soil in the sod.
