How to Remove a Mower Deck From a Toro

You need to remove the mower deck on your Toro riding lawn mower regularly for cleaning, maintenance and servicing. Fortunately, Toro designs their riding lawn mowers to allow you to remove the deck without any tools. However, you will still need to follow all safety precautions and wear protective gear when removing the mower deck.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Toro lawn mower on a level area. Push the foot pedal down and engage the parking brake lever. Set the clutch to the "Disengaged" setting. Turn the ignition off and remove the key.

    • 2

Unfasten the rubber boot from the end of the spark plug and move it where it won't contact the plug during deck removal. Move the blade engagement lever, next to the seat, to the "Off" setting. Lower the mower deck to its lowest cutting position.

    • 3

Pull out the hairpin clip from the PTO (power take off) cable and disconnect the PTO cable from the mower deck and its accompanying spring. The PTO cable is the spring running in between the belt pulleys on the deck. Pull the deck belt off the engine's main pulley.

    • 4

Take out the deck support pin from the left-hand side of the mower. Release the deck from the left deck arm. Take the pin out of the right-hand side in the same manner. The deck support arms sit on both sides of the mower, near the seat and link the deck to the mower. Pull up on the deck lift lever to raise up the deck arms.

Move the cutting deck forward slightly while allowing the hooks, underneath the mower, on the deck to release from the deck stabilizing rod. Pull the mower deck out from the right-hand side of the lawn mower.
