How do I Remove Grease Stains From a Cedar Deck?

Grease stains on a cedar deck commonly occur during grilling season. As grease from burgers and oils from other foods splatter or spill, grease stains form on the cedar deck. It's best to tackle the problem quickly so the grease doesn't have time to soak into the wood. While commercial deck-cleaning products are available for general cleaning and stain removal, products from home also work effectively and efficiently, saving you money and sparing you the chemical exposure.

  • Baking soda
  • 1/4 cup mild liquid hand dishwashing detergent

Instructions

    • 1

Pour baking soda over the grease stain on the cedar deck as quickly as possible. Allow the baking soda to absorb the grease stain while you gather other stain-removing supplies.

    • 2
Rubber gloves protect the skin from drying out or becoming irritated by cleaning solutions.

Mix 1/4 cup mild liquid hand dishwashing detergent with 1 gallon hot water in a bucket. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands and mix the soapy solution with one hand.

    • 3
Use a scrub brush to help remove cedar deck stains.

Sweep up the baking soda with a broom and dust pan and discard the baking soda. Dip a scrub brush in the soapy solution and scrub the grease stain. Continue to dip the scrub brush in the soap water and scrub until the grease stain has lifted.
