How to Clean Bulk Silos

Cleaning bulk silos can be a challenging endeavor. Have a professional clean your bulk silo once every two years or so. Clean empty silos with industrial strength cleaning equipment. Since most silos hold food-grade materials, you must perform regular cleaning with a safe, non-toxic solution. With this solution and the aid of a high-pressure sprayer, you can perform regular cleanings of your bulk silo.

  • Vinegar
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Distilled water
  • Clean bucket
  • Paint stir stick
  • High pressure sprayer
  • Safety harness
  • Goggles

Instructions

    • 1

      Mix one part vinegar, one part liquid dish soap and 10 parts distilled water into a clean bucket. Mix the solution with a paint stir stick.

      Pour the solution into a high-pressure sprayer system. Add at least five gallons of the solution.

      Place the sprayer at the top of the silo. Remove the access cover at the top of the silo. Strap on the safety harness to prevent falls. Put on goggles and a safety mask before you begin cleaning.

      Spray down the interior of the silo with the high-pressure sprayer to remove any buildup or deposits from the sides of the silo.

      Allow the solution to absorb into the silo for at least six hours before rinsing. The solution kills bacteria as it soaks into the interior.

      Empty any remaining solution from the sprayer tank. Add 5 gallons of clean, distilled water to the tank for rinsing.

      Rinse the interior of the silo wth the high-pressure sprayer and the distilled water. Rinse away any remaining soap and vinegar solution from the inside. Allow the silo to air dry for around 12 hours.
