How to Build a Garden Loveseat

Any furniture positioned in a garden is automatically more romantic. So when the furniture is a loveseat, the romance is heightened. Building a garden loveseat is a project that can be done entirely with two-by-fours and can be customized to be as fancy as desired beyond that. Using treated lumber is necessary when building outdoor furniture, and an all-weather stain is also helpful for ensuring the durability of the loveseat.

Instructions

    • 1

Set two 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 16 inch boards parallel to each other with their largest sides on the working surface. Set two more 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 16 inch boards on top of them, perpendicular to them so they form a square with all the corners evenly aligned.

    • 2

Drill two holes through each corner for a total of eight holes, so that the holes go through both boards, but not completely through the second board. Set 2 1/2 inch wood screws in the holes and tighten them completely. Repeat with four additional boards to complete the two leg units.

    • 3

Set the two leg units upright, with the help of an assistant, parallel to each other and about three feet apart. Set four 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 48 inch boards on top of them, spacing them slightly so there is about a half inch of space between them. Drill two holes through the long boards and into each leg unit, for a total of 16 holes. Set 2 1/2 inch wood screws in the holes and fasten the long boards to the leg units to form the seat of the loveseat.

    • 4

Build the backrest support of the loveseat by holding two 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 28 inch boards against the rear of the leg units and seat, so that the backrest support boards stick up 24 inches above the seat. Drill four holes through the back of each backrest support board and into the seat and leg unit boards. Attach the backrest support boards to the loveseat with 2 1/2 inch wood screws tightened thoroughly.

    • 5

Hold three 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 48 inch boards horizontally and evenly spaced across the backrest support boards, leaving about two inches between each board. Drill two holes through each of these boards, which are the backrest boards, and into each of the backrest support boards. Drill a total of 12 holes and fill them with 2 1/2 inch wood screws tightened securely.

    • 6

Add the armrests of the loveseat by positioning a 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 8 inch board on top of each corner of the seat, with its widest section facing front to back. Drill two holes up through the bottom of the seat and into each armrest board. Attach the armrest boards to the seat with 2 1/2 inch wood screws.

    • 7

Lay a 1 1/2 by 3 1/2 by 16 inch armrest top board across each pair of armrest boards. Drill two holes down through the top board and into each of the boards underneath. Attach the top boards to the arm rests using 2 1/2 inch wood screws.
