Can You Flip a No Flip Mattress?

You should flip your mattress each season to keep the springs in good working order and foam from sagging due to the same person sleeping in the same position every night. In the case of a no flip mattress, the rules are little different. While no flip mattresses hold true to their name and design, being low-maintenance to own, that doesn't mean all forms of maintenance fly out the proverbial window.
  1. Maintenance

    • Although no flip mattress manufacturers state clearly that flipping the mattress over causes damage, they do recommend rotating them by 180 degrees each season. In other words, rotate the top of the mattress to the foot of the bed and vice versa, prolonging mattress life and lessening occurrences of body depressions in the mattress top. Of course, if your no flip mattress is not often used, the need to rotate it or perform regular maintenance becomes compulsory and not required.

    Downside

    • Although the low-maintenance aspect of a no flip mattress is attractive to many consumers, the bottom construction of a no flip mattress is uncomfortable for sleeping at best. Since flipping the mattress is out of the question, pillowtop surfaces and the mattress itself will likely show evidence of body impressions sooner than flipped counterparts. This leads to frequent mattress replacement.

    Considerations

    • Many consumers believe that simply because they have a pillowtop mattress, it falls under the no flip category and this is not necessarily the case. Pillowtop mattresses maintain the same flipping schedule as a non-pillowtop mattress, providing they have a pillowtop on either side. If yours is a mattress with the pillowtop on one side of the mattress only, you probably have a no flip mattress and must remain relegated to rotation of the mattress, as opposed to flipping.

    Mattress Buying

    • Instead of listening to the seductive siren's song of mattresses requiring less work to own, consider the life span and warranty associated with a mattress. In the competitive sleep market, there exists a wide variety of mattress options, all with varying life spans and comfort levels. It is important to select a mattress that is both comfortable and long-lasting to alleviate necessity for added replacement expense over frequent durations.
