Can You Tile Stairs?

Tile is an option for covering stairs, but following certain safety precautions is key. The sometimes slick nature of tile is a potential falling risk on a staircase. You also need a durable base for the tile because the material is so much heavier than the carpet or hardwood normally found on stairs.
  1. Safety Considerations

    • Tile selection is key to keeping the stairs safe, especially if you plan to tile exterior stairs. Rain, snow and ice increase the slickness of the surface. Avoid tiles that are smooth, as they are more likely to cause you to slip as you step on them. This is true both inside and outside. Look for tiles with a rough surface that will create traction between your feet and the stairs.

    Base

    • A concrete or steel staircase typically gives you the strongest base for tile application. These materials are better able to withstand the weight of the tiles to avoid warping or breakdown of the structure. Wood is also a possibility depending on the strength of the design. Consult a knowledgeable contractor or engineer if you are unsure if your staircase is able to support the weight of tile. The stairs also need a mortar bed to serve as the base for the tiling. This gives the tiles a smooth, solid surface as the base.

    Installation

    • The installation of the tile on stairs is similar to installing on a floor or wall. A thinset mortar is used to adhere the tiles in place. Spacers keep the tiles aligned properly. Once the thinset hardens, the tile stairs are grouted. When installing the tiles, consider where you want to end up at the end. You don't want to walk on the tiles until they are set. If you're installing tiles inside going up to the second floor, start at the top and work down so you end up in the main living area.

    Variations

    • Instead of tiling all surfaces of the stairs, tile only the vertical riser portion. This gives the decorative accent of tile without risking a slick surface by tiling the treads of the stairs. You also reduce the amount of weight on the stair structure if you limit the tile to risers. If you want the look of tile without the weight, consider vinyl tiles that look like stone. You'll find a variety of vinyl tile options in most home improvement stores.
