How to Make a Double Iron Bed Into a Queen Size Bed

Extender rails let you quickly and effortlessly change the size of your bed. Double beds are up to 6 inches narrower and 5 inches shorter than queen beds. While double beds are an adequate size for guest rooms, the size might not feel comfortable for you and your spouse. Iron beds have rails that support the weight of your box spring and mattress. Replacing the rails with extender rails turns the bed into a queen size.

Instructions

    • 1

Hit the bottom of the rails on the bed with a rubber mallet until the rails come out of the headboard. If your iron bed features a footboard, gently hit the mallet along the bottom edge until both sides come loose from the bed.

    • 2

Line up the curved pieces on the end of one extender rail with the slots on the headboard. Insert the rail into the slots and push down. The curved edges slip around the headboard, securing the pieces together. Move to the other end of the headboard and insert the rails.

Attach the extender rails to the footboard. Push the extender rails through the slots in the footboard and gently press down until the pieces fit together. Repeat with the other end of the footboard, attaching the rails to both sides.

Place the center rail or crosspiece in the center of the bed. The crosspiece should have small L-brackets on the ends that fit into the slots on the extender rails. If both have small holes, screw a small metal screw through the top, which comes in the kit.

Find the L-shaped metal pieces near the edge of each rail. Slide the pieces out and place the mattress on top of the rails. Close the metal pieces, so that each sits flush with the mattress. These small brackets keep the mattress from moving on the bed.
