How to Convert a Universal Furniture Double Bed Into a Queen Bed

Universal Furniture manufactures dozens of beds in different sizes and shapes. A double bed serves for two people, but some find it a tight fit. A queen-size bed provides more space for two people. Extender rails are all you need to change the size of a standard, double bed. Universal Furniture beds, though, are somewhat different because they include wood sides that attach to the headboard and footboard, hiding the bed rails. Converting this type of double bed to a queen bed requires a little more work.

Instructions

  Remove the mattress and box springs from the bed. Remove the long, wood pieces on the sides of the bed, which cover the existing bed rails. Tap up on the bottom of each rail until the curved hooks on the edges pop free.

  Insert the end of one convertor rail into the slots on the left side of the headboard. The rail contains curved hooks that slide through the slots and keep the rail attached to the bed. Extender rails run from the headboard to the footboard, increasing the length of the bed.

  Push the extender rail's hooks through the slots on the footboard. Push down on the top of the rails, applying enough pressure so that the rails push down and lock into place.

  Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the second extender rail, attaching to the headboard and footboard.

  Place the crossbeam in the center of the bed between the two extender rails. The crossbeam features curved hooks that slip into holes on the rails. Set the hooked pieces on top of the holes, and push down until the crossbeam attaches to the rails.

  Locate the small metal brackets on the side of each rail, which look like an uppercase "L." The rail should have four pieces: one located near each end of the rail. Pull the pieces out, which increases the size of the frame and lets a queen bed fit on the double frame.

  Measure the height of the wood pieces that make the sides of the bed. Drill four holes, evenly spaced down the end of each piece. Dab wood glue inside each hole, and push a wood dowel on top of the glue. Measure the distance between the holes, and transfer those measurements to the sides of the headboard and footboard.

  Drill four matching holes on both the headboard and footboard. Place the end of one wood side piece against the side of the headboard, making sure that the dowels and holes are aligned. Push the dowels on the side piece into the holes on the headboard. Repeat the process to attach the other end of the side piece to the footboard.
