How to Make a Twin Beadboard Headboard

Beadboard paneling is used in many applications in housing construction, from wainscoting to bathroom walls and even ceilings. The distinct striped look of beadboard also makes it a good decorative element in DIY projects. A twin headboard made from beadboard can transform a bedroom, whether painted white or distressed for a classic country look, or painted with colorful stripes for a bright and cheerful accent in a kid’s room.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay two planks of 40-inch 2-by-2 lumber flat on a work table, 24 inches apart. Insert two planks of 24-inch 2-by-2 lumber between them to make a rectangle. Insert two more pieces of 24-inch lumber between the 40-inch planks, evenly spaced between the outer planks.

    • 2

Glue the ends of all the 24-inch planks to the sides of the 40-inch planks and let them dry. Secure them by driving two 2 1/2-inch wood screws through the sides of the 40-inch planks into each end of the 24-inch pieces. This is the frame for the beadboard headboard.

    • 3

Lay the frame flat on your work table. Place a piece of 28-by-40-inch beadboard on top of the frame. The beadboard should be flush all around with the sides of the frame.

    • 4

Secure the beadboard to the frame by driving finishing nails every 3 to 4 inches around the perimeter of the beadboard, as well as into the two central 24-inch planks of the frame.

    • 5

Paint the beadboard headboard as desired and let it dry.

    • 6

Draw a 40-inch level line on the wall 26 inches above the mattress level of your twin bed. Use a stud finder to locate and mark the positions of wall studs on the line. Choose two wall stud positions that are near the ends of the line.

    • 7

Place the wall portion of two flush mounts onto the chosen stud positions, with the bottoms of the flush mounts on the level wall line. Secure the wall portions of the flush mounts to the wall studs with the screws that came with the flush mounts.

    • 8

Insert the hanging portion of the flush mounts into the wall mount portion and apply a small amount of paint to the screw hole positions of the hanging portions.

    • 9

Hold the headboard up to the wall where you want to hang it. Press it against the hanging portion of the flush mounts to transfer the painted position of the screw holes to the top of the headboard frame.

    • 10

Remove the headboard and the hanging portion of the flush mounts. Attach the hanging portion of the flush mounts to the back of the headboard frame, using the painted screw hole positions as guides.

    • 11

Return the headboard to the wall, inserting the hanging portion of the flush mounts into the wall portion to achieve a strong and flush mounting.
