How to Make Your Own Bed Frame With a Cushioned Headboard

A headboard reflects as much about your home’s décor as does any other piece of furniture. Upholstered headboards, also called cushioned headboards, add elegance and warmth to your bedroom. They’re more comfortable to lean against than hard headboards. Making your own cushioned headboard matching your bed frame is easy. Even if you’re building the headboard from scratch, use simple materials that are easy to work with, such as plywood.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the bed frame’s width. Record the proposed headboard’s height. Purchase a piece of ¼-inch plywood cut to these measurements.

    • 2

Purchase 2-inch thick foam and batting and thick, upholstery fabric.

    • 3

Cut the foam and batting to the plywood’s exact size with the knife and scissors. Cut the fabric 6 to 8 inches wider and longer than the plywood.

    • 4

Lay the plywood out flat and place the foam on top it. Place the batting over the foam. Lay the fabric over the batting with the fabric’s outside facing upwards.

    • 5

Pull the fabric around the back of the plywood and staple it in place. Place a staple every inch. Pull the fabric taut over the headboard as you staple it.
