What Is the Meaning of Armoire?

An armoire is a piece of wooden furniture that originated in Europe and is now commonly found in many homes and other locations throughout the United States. The word armoire is of French origin derived from the Latin word armarium, which means cupboard.
  1. Identification

    • An armoire is a freestanding wooden cupboard with two doors that typically open outward. Most armoires also have one or two rows of drawers at their base, located below the doors.

    Function

    • An armoire is intended for storage, but unlike other shelving units, items kept in an amoire are hidden from view behind its doors or inside its drawers.

    Types

    • Armoires are often used as entertainment centers in bedrooms or living rooms, or as wardrobes in bedrooms to hang shirts or other items. There are also small armoires designed to sit upon a table to be used as jewelry boxes.

    Materials

    • Armoires are made from many different types of wood, such as cherry, maple or oak, and may be left in their natural color, painted or stained. Armoires typically have metal knobs for opening and closing the doors and drawers, and some feature carvings on their surface to enhance their appearance.

    Cost

    • As of December 2009, simple armoires had starting prices around $200, with pieces that have more elaborate designs or heavier wood costing over $1,000.
