Mokara Orchid Care

The Mokara orchid is a hybrid orchid resulting from the cross between Arachnis, Ascocentrum and Vanda generas. Like other orchids that are grown from Ascocenda and Vanda, the Mokara orchid comes in a variety of colors and produces flowers that are between 2 and 4 inches across. Like their parents, Mokara orchids are native to many parts of Asia, though they can be grown in a hot, moist indoor climate. With the proper care, you should be able to keep a Mokara orchid healthy for many years.
  1. Light

    • Mokara orchids grow best in full sunlight. The ideal conditions for proper growth would be in a window that receives full morning sunlight that fades into indirect sunlight in the afternoon. If you do not have a window that gets proper sunlight, you should reduce the frequency of the orchid's water and fertilizer.

    Temperature

    • Keep the Mokara in a room that receives a steady, high temperature. Mokara orchids will not survive in an environment that dips below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, though ideally the temperature should be between 75 and 85 degrees F. Mokara orchids will survive in a temperature up to 100 degrees F.

    Water

    • Water the orchid once every few mornings in the early morning. You should water until the orchid's crown is wet, but that it dries out by the afternoon.

    Fertilizer

    • Mokara orchids are heavy feeders, so fertilizer is extremely important for proper care. Fertilize the orchids once every seven days during the spring, summer and early fall with a liquid orchid fertilizer. From the middle of the fall through the winter, you only need to fertilize once a month.

    Fungicide

    • To prevent root rot in the Mokara orchid, which is a problem during cool periods, treat the orchid's crown with a Dithane M-45 fungicide once a season.
