Information on Black Cherry Capsules

Black cherries are a common culinary ingredient in fruit juice, jams, jellies, pies and other drinks and desserts. In addition to their uses in the kitchen, they are also used as a dietary supplement.
  1. Types

    • There are two types of black cherry supplements. One is made from the bark of the black cherry tree and is used to treat coughs and colds, while the other is made from the fruit and is sold as a remedy for gout. Black cherry supplements are sold in capsule and liquid form.

    History

    • According to the American Indian Health and Diet Project website, Native Americans used various parts of the black cherry tree as medicine. The inner tree bark was used to treat everything from stomach discomfort to labor pains. It was also used to treat intestinal worms, burns and skin-related conditions. Native Americans and early American colonists made cough syrup from black cherry fruit.

    Benefits

    • WebMD suggests that black cherry bark capsules may have antioxidant properties as well as medicinal value as a cough suppressant. However, as of 2010 no research studies have analyzed the effectiveness of these supplements or established a recommended dosage.
