How to Remove Flowers From the Herb Chives

Chives, which are perennial flowering herbs represent an excellent source of iron, folate, potassium, magnesium and vitamins A, C and K. The purple flowers of the chives are not only beautiful to see growing in your garden, they are also edible. Removing the chive flowers will give you a tasty garnish for a summer salad, and it will also allow the remainder of the chive plant to soak up the nutrients gained by the sun and water.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the chive's flowers to open, if you are cutting the purple tops to eat. If you are removing the flowers to allow the plant to grow new leaves, remove the flowers at the bud stage before they have opened.

    • 2

Remove each individual stalk that contains the purple chive's flower with a pair of sharp scissors. Cut the stalk near the flower as it will be discarded.

    • 3

Bring the flowers inside and remove any remaining stalks by cutting them off with the sharp scissors. The stalks themselves are edible as well, but do not have a pleasant taste.

    • 4

Wash the flowers until a cool tap before consuming.
