How to Make a Climbing Plant Grow Faster

Transform a skimpy plant into a lush, green wall of beauty by cultivating it to top growth.

  Plant most vines on the left side of the planting support. According to the University of Minnesota, most vines grow around and through the supports from left to right. Place the vine in the ground, deep enough to cover the roots, during early spring months.

  Guide the growth of the plant by tying the vines to the trellis using string. Make loose bonds, not tight ones. Move the strings every few weeks, guiding the vine along the support. Train the vines to grow in a natural formation. Don't twist or bend vines, coax them to grow through string guiding.

  Fertilize the climbing plant at the beginning of the summer, using a liquid fertilizer like 10-10-10. Provide the plants with 1 inch of water a week if no natural precipitation occurs.

  Remove spent flowers by pulling them off with your fingers. Prune plants in spring, cutting away woody portions with pruning shears.

  Cover the base of the plant with mulch, about 2 inches deep. Vine plants prefer to have cool roots.
