How to Germinate Dahlberg Daisies

Dahlberg daisies appeal to many gardeners for their dainty, golden-yellow flowers and resilient nature, which works well in a variety of garden themes. Growing to 12 inches in height with an equal spread, they have a compact growth habit of lacy, bluish-green foliage and work equally well as border plants and in dry, draining rock gardens. Dahlberg daisies take approximately four months to bloom after germination, so it is best to start the seeds indoors six weeks before the last frost.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather seed from a healthy Dahlberg daisy plant in late summer once the husks dry out, or acquire seed from a garden shop. Store the seeds in a dark, dry place until late winter.

    • 2

Fill a 2-inch-deep seedling tray with standard potting soil. Place the tray on a warming mat under a large, well lighted window.

    • 3

Dampen the top 1/2 inch of the soil with a spray bottle. Sprinkle the Dahlberg daisy seed over the surface of the soil so one or two fall per square inch. Press the seeds into the dampened soil to anchor them.

    • 4

Spread a scant layer of potting soil on top of the Dahlberg daisy seeds to lightly cover them. Pat the soil to increase contact with the seeds.

    • 5

Set the warming mat to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Mist the surface of the soil every few days to keep it slightly damp. Watch for signs of germination in seven days.

    • 6

Scoop out the Dahlberg daisy seedlings once they reach at least 2 inches tall. Pot them in individual 4-inch planters filled with potting soil.

    • 7

Keep the Dahlberg daisy seedlings in their containers until soil temperatures reach 68 degrees Fahrenheit, then plant them in a sunny bed with rich, freely draining soil.
