How to Germinate Rudbeckia Denver Daisies

Rudbeckia Denver daisies, better known by the common name of black-eyed Susans, display deep yellow or orange petals with a dark brown center. These flowers grow atop tall stalks and are heat and drought resistant. They often bloom late into the summer and early fall when other flowering plants have died back. Rudbeckia Denver daisies grow well from seeds, which you can germinate indoors prior to planting them in their permanent ground location.

Instructions

  Spread newspaper over a work surface to protect it from damage during planting. Set a seed tray on the center of the newspaper. You can use either a seed tray with compartments or without compartments, as desired.

  Fill the seed tray with a sterile potting soil mix until it reaches 1/4 inch from the top rim of the tray. Smooth the soil out with your fingers, but don’t pack it down.

  Set the seed tray inside another container and water the top of the soil until it is saturated and water drains out of the bottom.

  Open a package of Rudbeckia Denver daisy seeds and sprinkle them over the surface, approximately 1 inch apart. If your seed tray has compartments, insert one to two seeds per compartment.

  Press the seeds down into the soil very lightly using your finger, but do not cover them with soil. Rudbeckia Denver daisy seeds require light for germination.

  Place the seed tray in an area that receives full sunlight, such as a window or outdoors if the temperatures are above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

  Water the soil daily using a spray bottle so that you do not wash away the seeds. Keep the soil constantly moist until you see Rudbeckia Denver daisy sprouts emerge from the soil in approximately seven days.
