Growing Tips for San Pedro Cactus

Location

• San Pedro cactus is a native to the Andes Mountains of Peru, where it occurs at elevations between 5,000 and 9,000 feet. The cactus also occurs naturally elsewhere in South America, growing in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Ecuador. San Pedro cactus' tolerance of high elevation allows it to grow better in cool climates than many other types of cactus. San Pedro is suitable for USDA zones 8B to 10. Grow in full sunlight or partial shade.

Soil

• Like other cacti, San Pedro cactus requires a well-draining potting medium. The plant will not grow properly in garden soil or potting compost. Use a commercial cactus potting mix, or mix two parts garden soil with one part coarse sand and one part fine gravel. If planting in a container, use a container with a hole in the bottom to allow for proper drainage.

Moisture

• San Pedro cactus is quite drought-tolerant once established, and requires little supplemental watering. When watering, water thoroughly and deeply. Allow soil to become almost completely dry, but not bone dry, between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter to allow for the cactus' dormancy. Fertilize annually in the spring with a water soluble fertilizer to enhance flowering capabilities and encourage healthy new growth.

Propagation

• San Pedro cactus may be propagated by seeds or cuttings anytime in the spring or summer. Plant seeds in a well draining cactus potting medium and cover with a thin layer of sand. Water thoroughly and move to a bright, sunny location when plant begins to produce leaves. Place cuttings in a slightly damp potting medium, in either a container or in the garden, and keep moist by misting lightly with water.
