How to Prune Torenia

Torenia is a flowering annual known botanically as Torenia fournieri and more commonly as the wish bone flower. It is prized for its wide range of flower hues and its long flowering period from late spring through fall. Torenia is grown in beds and borders and in hanging baskets where its draping stems can be show to best advantage. It prefers moist soil and sold widely in garden centers and nurseries as seed or as established plants. It requires little pruning save in-season tidying and simple end of season or winter shearing.

      Inspect your torenia every few days when you water to look for dying stems, spent flowers, broken or discolored foliage, stems laying in the soil or signs of disease. Cut away any trouble spots you find down to healthy growth and discard them.

      Prune fading torenia flower stems and foliage in the fall after the peak of bloom has passed. Leave the plant in place when growing in warm climates and water in well to maintain green throughout the winter.

      Shear down your torenia in the late fall or winter after the frost hard frost and the foliage has died back. Shear off all of the plant top down to the crown at the soil line. Alternatively you can rip the plant and roots out of the soil and discard leaving the seeds that have dropped to the soil for next year.
