How to Change the Curb Appeal of a House

Curb appeal can make or break a first impression. Most people do not want the outside of their home to represent chaos and disarray. Some simple fixes and updates may help your house make a better first impression on visitors and potential buyers or renters. Before you begin renovating, take your home's age and architectural personality into consideration.

Instructions

    • 1

Pressure wash walkways and sidewalks for a fresh, clean appearance. Passers-by may make assumptions about cleanliness inside the home based on the outward appearance.

    • 2

Remove weeds and dead plants from the property to clean the landscaping up a bit. Use your lawnmower on a regular basis to keep grass blades trimmed. This seems like an obvious and fast improvement, but many homeowners overlook the effect an unkempt lawn has on their home's appearance.

    • 3

Prune any out-of-control bushes or shrubs for a cleaner appearance. Be cautious not to over-prune, leaving the plants looking boxy and unnatural. Trim dead branches from trees.

    • 4

Replace outdated, stock or simply ugly railings on porches and decks. Trade in those cheap black iron handrails for banisters with character and visual interest.

    • 5

Apply a fresh coat of paint to front doors and garage doors, or spend a little more and replace damaged or unattractive ones. A visitor's eye should be drawn to the entrance of the home. Add character to that entrance with an intriguing salvaged or antique front door. Pay attention to the molding around the door as well.

Vary your flower selection to include plants that bloom in the fall as well as those that bloom in spring and summer. Consider adding an evergreen or two for winter greenery. The goal is year-round color in your front yard.
