How to Change the Look of a Colonial House

While most people can spot a colonial style home, not nearly as many people can articulate what exactly makes a colonial style home look colonial. Characteristics include a symmetrical shape, with a front door right in the middle of the face of the house, two windows on either side of the door, a medium pitched roof and a chimney. While such houses exude traditional style and elegance, they're not everyone's cup of tea. Small changes can change the look of a colonial home to a more suitable style.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all shutters if you have any. Paint the house a neutral color such as any shade of brown, gray, yellow, orange or tan, staying away from traditional colonial house colors blue, green, red or cream.

    • 2

Enlarge the windows at the front of the house, opting for an enormous rectangular window or large arched windows. Bigger windows will give a home a more modern look.

    • 3

Add a balcony off the second floor at the front of the house. A balcony, aside from giving you more outdoor space, will update and alter the look of a colonial home, making it appear more modern.

    • 4

Landscape the front yard adding elements such as a rock garden, a pond or waterfall. Sculpt hedges into manicured shapes and figures. Colonial homes typically have understated front lawns with just grass and few neatly trimmed bushes.
