How to Design a Backyard Oasis

A backyard oasis reflects whatever idea you have of a peaceful landscape. You oasis can include traditional Japanese landscaping, which marries philosophy with natural elements, or it could be a quiet spot for reading. The design of any type of backyard oasis should match the gardener's needs. Meditation spaces, outdoor cooking or painting areas can be incorporated into your desired design. In addition, you can decide how much yard renovation you need to plan, or try to use existing structures and elements for your oasis.

Divide the lawn into designated areas to provide privacy for certain regions of the yard. You can erect a trellis to divide one area of the lawn from the other. Plant vines, so that they creep up your trellis to create additional privacy.

Plant tall trees, medium height shrubs and low-laying ground cover to create interesting textures as suggested by "Coastal Living" magazine. A backyard oasis doesn't have to look like a well-manicured lawn. In fact, you will achieve the feeling of being in paradise if plants look slightly overgrown, an effect you will have if you choose plants that grow to different heights.

Use tropical plants in containers. Most areas of the country don't have a climate like the tropical region of south Florida. However, you can plant tropical plants in containers and bring them inside during the winter. Tropical plants have large foliage and brightly colored blossoms, which contributes an exotic look to your yard.

Install a water feature such as a pond, waterfall or small lake. Water features create dramatic focal points for the lawn. In addition, you can fill them with water lilies, koi or small islands. Many Japanese landscapes use water features for their ability to provide a soothing mood.

Place garden furniture in areas with good views of the lawn. Sit in each chair and make sure that the view offers a great perspective to the lawn. In addition, buying lawn furniture made from natural materials such as wood allows the furniture to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the landscape.
