How to Design an Entertainer's Backyard

A well-planned backyard has space for getting together with friends and family members. If entertaining is something you love to do, the design of your backyard should facilitate the various activities you enjoy with your guests. Whether you throw lavish backyard parties, casual bonfires, summer pool parties or gourmet grilled feasts, create an area or two that have the space and amenities that allow you to throw your particular kind of bash. If you fancy yourself a true entertainer, design a backyard that will wow your guests.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down the types of entertainment activities you want to have in your backyard. Include the typical activities, such as grilling or game-playing. But if you have any particular talent or pursuit that engages other people, include a place for that. For example, if you and your friends are musical, create a space where you can have karaoke or a band. Do you love to cook and feed people? Create a patio kitchen that's big enough for you to demonstrate your grilling skills a la Bobby Flay or Paula Deen.

    • 2

Sketch out the backyard you envision. Include the built-in features you will need for the activities you listed in Step 1. Make sure the built-in features are big enough to accommodate both you and all of your guests. If you want a stage, for example, have room around it for seating.

    • 3

Start by building a deck or patio that can accommodate multiple table and chairs. Add built-in seating in the form of benches along the sides of the patio or deck for more seating. Build a covered storage area to hold extra chairs and tables when they aren't in use for entertaining.

    • 4

Add to the deck or patio, depending on the activity you want to feature at your backyard gatherings. Place the outdoor kitchen just outside the indoor kitchen, adjacent to the patio or deck. If it's a stage that you want, build that adjacent to the patio. A pool is always an amenity that complements a backyard bash. Make it a focal point of your backyard, and include a waterfall with special landscaping.

    • 5

Make provisions for your electrical, lighting and sound needs. An outdoor kitchen will need ample lighting for nighttime grilling. Any stage will need a sound system. Install one that's designated for outdoor use. Put in mood lighting around a pool and the patio. This can include white twinkle lights and lanterns. Solar lights are also an option.

    • 6

Create at least one additional seating area in another area of the yard. If you're having a large bash, this will give guests who want to have a quiet chat a place to sit and talk. Add to its privacy by putting it in a gazebo or arbor.

    • 7

Build a privacy fence. Although your neighbors may very well be your guests, a fence will make your backyard party feel contained and comfortable.

    • 8

Landscape the backyard with plants, flowers and decorative elements to make it look attractive.
