How to Seal Limestone Pavers

Limestone is a naturally occurring stone found near oceans, other bodies of salt water and in caves. It is durable and is often made into pavers for walkways and patios. To keep your limestone pavers looking their best, apply a protective sealant to them soon after installation. The sealant prevents stains from becoming permanent and preserves the color of the limestone pavers.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the limestone pavers thoroughly with a broom to remove all dirt, leaves and debris.

    • 2

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of water and 2 to 3 tsp. of an industrial-strength degreasing cleaner. These cleaners are available at automotive supply stores and janitorial supply stores.

    • 3

Insert a long-handled scrub brush into the cleaning mixture and scrub the surface of the limestone pavers, concentrating on any stains.

    • 4

Rinse the limestone pavers with a garden hose to remove all cleaning residue. Allow the pavers to sit for at least 24 hours until they are dry. If it rains during this period, start the 24 hours over, since the pavers must be completely dry.

    • 5

Open a can of sealant designed for limestone and pour it into a paint tray.

    • 6

Insert a paint roller with an extension handle into the sealant; use it to roll a thin layer of sealant over the surface of all limestone pavers.

    • 7

Allow the sealant to dry until it is no longer sticky to the touch, and then apply a second coat. Drying time varies based on the humidity and air temperature in your area.

    • 8

Allow the sealant to dry for at least 24 to 48 hours, and test again to see if it is dry to the touch. If so, it is safe to walk on the limestone pavers.
