How to Install Staggered Posts

Installing a fence requires the use of posts that you need to set in the ground. Depending on the fence design you may need to stagger the posts. "Offset" is also a term that is used to describe a stagger because a straight line is not used. To install a post you first need to dig a hole in the ground. For this a post hole digger or an auger can be used.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the placement of the fence with the tape measure.

    • 2

Drive a stake into the ground with the hammer to mark one end of your fence. Drive another stake into the ground to mark the other end of the fence. Tie the string between the two stakes to plot the line for the fence.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the stake to the location of the next post. Measure out from the string to the distance you want to offset the post. Drive a stake into the ground with the hammer.

    • 4

Measure the distance from the second stake to the location of the next post. Measure out from the string in the opposite direction of the previous post.

    • 5

Repeat this process to mark the location of the staggered or offset posts with the stakes.

    • 6

Pull the first stake out of the ground and dig the hole for the post with an auger or post hole digger. Dig the remaining holes for the posts that you need to install. The holes need to be at least 12 to 14 inches deep.

    • 7

Place 2 to 3 inches of gravel or small rocks into the bottom of each hole for drainage. Place the posts in the holes. Keep the post centered and then fill the hole with 6 to 8 inches of pea stone. Tamp on the pea stone to keep the post secure.

    • 8

Fill the remainder of the post hole with dirt using the shovel.
