How to Install Log Posts on a Cabin

Log cabin design dates back to the colonial times of the United States. However, log cabins continue to be a popular home design for summer homes or retreats. The cornerstone of log cabin building is the installation of the log posts. The log posts are the vertically installed logs that are typically installed in the four corners of a cabin, depending on the design. The design and size of the cabin will also dictate the height of the log posts and the depth at which they are installed into the ground. A common depth for most cabin log posts is approximately 2 feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 2 feet on the ends of the four posts with a tape measure. Mark this distance with a pencil on each of the logs to be installed.

    • 2

Find the places where the posts will be installed and mark them with stakes.

    • 3

Use a post hole digger to dig out 2 feet for the first hole. To operate the post hole digger, grasp each handle, drive the digger down into the earth solidly, squeeze the two handles together and pull out the dirt caught between. Make a pile off to the side to place the dirt that is dug out. Dig out the other holes to 2 feet in depth.

    • 4

Place a 2-foot-long section of 2-by-4 sideways in each hole and set the level on it. Shift the dirt around at the bottom of the hole with the 2-by-4 end if need be until the the bubble rests in the center of the level. Repeat this step to make the bottoms of all the post holes level.

    • 5

Mix concrete in a large bucket or wheelbarrow, according to the instructions on the bag. Two to three bags will probably be needed to mount four cabin posts.

    • 6

Set a post in one of the holes with the help of an assistant. Make sure the post is centered in the hole. Pour the concrete into the hole. Hold the post in place for at least five minutes or until the post initially settles. Repeat this process to mount the other cabin posts.
