How to Eliminate Antifreeze Off the Driveway

Antifreeze not only stains driveways, but it is dangerous to animals and the environment. When you add antifreeze to your vehicle, you must be careful not to spill it. Containers that are not sealed or stored away from children or pets can cause dangerous spills to occur. While rinsing the antifreeze off the driveway may seem like a logical idea, it actually causes the chemicals to wash into drains that go to local waterways and it only slightly dilutes the solution. Soak antifreeze off the driveway to eliminate it to protect the environment.

Instructions

  1. Blot Stain

    • 1

Put on gloves to protect your hands from the coolant.

    • 2

Remove excess antifreeze from the driveway by blotting it up with paper towels or old washcloths.

    • 3

Place the washcloths or paper towels into a garbage bag.

    Cat Litter

    • 4

Pour fresh clumping cat litter onto the antifreeze stain to absorb it. Allow the cat litter to absorb the coolant overnight for best results.

    • 5

Brush the cat litter over the antifreeze stain with a broom to help it absorb the liquid.

    • 6

Dispose of the cat litter in an old can with a lid or garbage bag that you can seal completely.

    Dish Detergent

    • 7

Combine an equal amount of liquid or powdered detergent with water to create a paste.

    • 8

Apply the soap solution over the coolant stain and let it rest for two to three minutes.

    • 9

Scrub on the stain with a stiff nylon scrub brush.

    • 10

Blot the soap off the driveway with paper towels or absorb the excess liquid with cat litter or another absorbent material.
