How to Wash Taffeta

The look of taffeta is luxurious; however, if the material is dirty or stained the look is far from stunning. Whether you need to clean a stylish dress, or launder a pair of curtains, the process must be done carefully and precisely to avoid ruining the fabric. The primary difference between real and faux taffeta is that real taffeta is made from silk fibers whereas faux taffeta is made from synthetic fibers. Know what type of taffeta you have prior to cleaning; this information is found on the manufacturer's label.

Instructions

    • 1

Use steam to remove the stain by waving a hand steamer over the area. Hold the steamer 3-5 inches away from the fabric and wave back and forth for five minutes. Use a clean cloth to dab the area of the stain or dirt. Do not rub -- this will cause the dirt or stain to penetrate deeper into the fabric. Repeat the process until the stain or dirt is removed.

    • 2

Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add one part mild detergent to three parts water. Mix thoroughly and saturate the entire taffeta fabric. Use your hand to swirl the fabric around and leave it in the water for five minutes. Remove the fabric and blot the stain with a clean cloth. Dip the fabric again in the water and remove. Do not ring out the fabric. Allow it to air dry.

Dip a clean cloth in club soda and dab the dry fabric. Move the cloth in small circular motions to saturate the fabric. This method works best on faux taffeta. The wet soda may leave a ring on real taffeta. Allow it to air dry.

Spray the fabric with a mild cleaning agent and leave it for 10 minutes. Use a clean toothbrush to gently work the cleaning agent into the fabric. Wipe the area clean with a clean cloth. Allow it to air dry.

Wash the taffeta in the washing machine on "cold" and add a mild detergent. Do not wash the taffeta with other fabrics. Only allow the washer to do one rinse cycle. Remove the taffeta promptly and hang dry.
