How to Get Yellow Spots Off of a Tablecloth

Many families treasure heirloom tablecloths handed down from mother to daughter over the years, or they simply have tablecloths they treasure. Clean older tablecloths that are yellow with age carefully due to their condition, delicacy or the lack of color-guard. Hand-wash older tablecloths and monitor them for color-fastness when washing to get off yellow spots. Wash newer tablecloths according to the type of material they are made of and the directions on the label.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the tablecloth by hand. Mix a solution of ½ scoop of powdered oxygen bleach and enough water to cover the tablecloth.

    • 2

Soak the tablecloth for four to six hours. If the stain is still visible after this period of time, let it soak overnight.

    • 3

Wash the tablecloth on the washer cycle as directed by the label on the tablecloth. Wash with oxygen bleach in as hot a temperature of water as the label directions allow. Washing in hot water at 120 to 140 degrees F lifts stains, assuming the fabric tolerates it.

    • 4

Hang the tablecloth on a clothesline by stretching it across the line as tightly as possible. Use as many clothespins as necessary to keep the tablecloth taut so that it dries evenly and is completely exposed to the whitening effects of the sun.

    • 5

Repeat the process if the stain does not come out after the first treatment.
