How to Restore Velvet

Velvet is a luxurious material that combines elegance and affordability. This is because velvet is a mixture of both silk and either cotton or nylon fabrics. It's much easier to care for than pure silk or other delicate fabrics, but this does not mean that it doesn't come with its own set of challenges. For example, the fibers of the velvet can easily become matted or flattened, which takes away a lot of the luxurious look and feel. Restoring the velvet can help bring back its original opulence.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the velvet item on a hanger inside out. Smooth the fabric and straighten out any kinks.

    • 2

Fill your iron with water and switch it to the steam setting.

    • 3

Wait for the iron to heat up. Then, apply the steam to the back side of the velvet garment where it needs to be restored. The steam will help fluff the velvet fibers.

    • 4

Flip the garment right side in and inspect your work. Fluff the velvet lightly with your fingers. If it still seems a little matted, apply more steam.
