How to Steam Utensils

Steam cleaning is known to be an effective method of destroying non-spore-bearing organisms, such as salmonella, which are known to spread readily through physical contact. For home cleaning, use a steam cleaning dishwasher or kitchen steam cleaner to kill bacteria on utensils. These tools enable safe utilization of steam as a sterilizing medium and limit direct contact with water and heating elements, preventing injury. Employ steam cleaners regularly to keep your kitchen as germ-free as possible.

Rinse the utensils in running water to remove large particles. Load the soiled utensils inside a steam dishwasher. Close the door and press "Steam Clean." Do not interrupt the cleaning cycle.

Place the cooking rack inside of the pan. Rest the utensils on the rack. Plug the steam cleaning jet into a nearby outlet, being cautious to keep the cord away from the sink and other wet surfaces. Spray the utensils with steam, moving the nozzle of the cleaner over the surface in a back-and-forth or sweeping motion. Keep the utensils saturated with steam for no less than 20 minutes.

Place the utensils on a rack, in a baking pan. Ensure there is 1 inch of space between the bottom of the rack and the pan. Boil water in a kettle. Pour the boiling water into the pan. Keep the water level wall beneath the rack. When water vapor slows and is no longer visible, transfer the rack of utensils to a second pan and add fresh boiling water. Rotate the utensils with a pair of tongs so that both sides receive equal amounts of steam. Repeat the procedure, keeping the utensils bathed in steam for at least 20 minutes.
