How to Remove a Cigarette Smoke Smell From Wood

If a smoker has been in your home, you still smell the effects long after his cigarettes are gone. Cigarette smoke clings to every surface it comes in contact with. If that surface is wood, simply wiping it down with some furniture polish may be ineffective. For an effective way to eliminate the odor without damaging the wood, you'll only need a few materials you may already have your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild dish soap
  • Clean cloth
  • Fan
  • White vinegar, baking soda or coffee grounds

Instructions

    • 1

Add enough of a mild dish soap into warm water to make the water sudsy.

    • 2

Dip a clean cloth into the soapy water and wring it out well.

    • 3

Wipe the wood down with a clean, dry cloth to absorb excess moisture.

    • 4

Move the wooden object outside to air-dry in the sunshine. Sunshine is an effective natural odor killer. If the wooden object cannot be taken outside, open up doors and windows and place a fan nearby to help circulate fresh air around the room.

    • 5

Place a bowl of white vinegar, baking soda or coffee grounds in or on the wooden object to help absorb any lingering odors overnight.
