How to Use a Spray Gun Cleaner

Spray guns are a fast and convenient way to spray a finish over a surface. If spray guns aren’t cleaned on a regular basis, the finish can accumulate in the gun, forming a layer of gunk that can make the gun inoperable. A spray gun cleaner will clean out any paint residue, prolong its life and keep it working properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Solvent appropriate to your finish
  • Cotton swab
  • Bucket

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the gun of any residual paint or finish. Fill the finish cup or container, which attaches to the gun, with a small amount of spray gun cleaner solvent.

    • 2

Swirl the solvent around in the container. The solvent will clean off any residue within the cup. Empty the container. Clean out the spray gun hose by pouring solvent through the hose.

    • 3

Refill the container with the spray gun solvent and connect it to the spray gun. Move to a well-ventilated or outside area. Depress the gun trigger to spray the cleaner. Continue spraying for a full minute.

    • 4

Remove the fluid needle, air cap, control knob spring and fluid nozzle from the spray gun. Open the finish container and place all the small, removed components inside. Check to ensure all the components are fully submerged in spray gun cleaner solvent. Clean off any larger parts by dipping a rag in solvent and wiping them down.

    • 5

Give the small components a few minutes to soak. Then place them in a dry area along with the larger components and allow them all to air dry.

    • 6

Use a swab to clean the fluid needle of any gunk or residue. Allow the fluid needle to air dry. Pour the spray gun cleaner solvent through your spray gun’s needle chamber. Hold the spray gun over a bucket so that it will catch the solvent as it escapes through the opposite end of the gun. Once all the components have dried, reassemble your spray gun.
