Allow the burners to cool down completely.
Fill the kitchen sink with hot, soapy water. Put one burner at a time in the water.
Wash each burner with a rag and the soapy water. Use a scouring pad to remove any buildup. Rinse the burners well, then dry thoroughly before putting them back on the stove.
Put the burners in a plastic bag with 1/4 cup of ammonia if they have tough-to-remove grime or burnt-on food. Place only one burner in the bag, and make sure the affected spots are covered with the ammonia. Leave the burner in the bag for 30 minutes, then wash well with hot, soapy water.
