How to Clean the Ignitor on Your Stove Top

Without an ignitor on your gas stove, you'd be serving gazpacho instead of tomato soup. The ignitor on a gas stove sends a spark to the gas to create and maintain a small fire that heats your food. When the ignitor isn't working properly, your light may remain unlit or you may be getting more sparks than you require. Cleaning the ignitor isn't only a good way to maintain your unit, but it can solve problems you're having getting the burners to light.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the gas to the stove. While you don't need to turn on the burner to clean the ignitor, it's better to be safe than sorry.

    • 2

Remove the burners from the stove or -- if you have a different model -- lift up the cooktop to access the ignitors.

    • 3

Dip the tip of your brush into rubbing alcohol, and gently shake the brush to remove any excess liquid.

    • 4

Place the head of the brush on the ignitor.

    • 5

Gently scrub the ignitor with the brush. Make sure to get underneath the ignitor too. The rubbing alcohol should help loosen the dirt. Once the ignitor is clean, let it dry completely before replacing the stovetop and burners.
