How to Connect a Home Alarm System

Once you buy an alarm kit, you will easily be able to connect and install it for your home safety. The basic kits will come with a loud bell that rings when your house is broken into, which will likely scare intruders away or alert your neighbors of a break-in. If you want to get a police service that will notify authorities of a break-in, you will have to sign up for that separately.

Instructions

Place the magnetic sensors that came with your alarm kit on your windows and doors. You will only need these sensors on doors and windows that lead to the outside. Once a door or window is opened, the electrical circuit will break, and the alarm will sound. These sensors come in two parts: a piece that sticks to the window or door, and a piece that sticks to the window or door frame.

Install your alarm keypad. The keypad will either stick to the wall or need to be drilled to the wall. All the screws that are needed will come with the kit. Place the keypad in an area that is easily located. Right next to the front door is a good spot, since you will likely have to enter a deactivation code immediately once you open the door.

Plug the alarm system transformer into the metal box that houses the electrical components for your home--usually located in your basement, attic or a closet.

    • 4

Attach the alarm bells to a wall in an area of the house where they'll easily be heard if activated.

    • 5

Activate your alarm by punching the activation code into your keypad. This code will come with your kit. There will be a few additional codes that you can activate if you want. These codes can shut the alarm off at certain times, activate it at certain hours and much more.
