How to Mount Bifold Doors

Inside almost every home you will find space-saving bifold doors. They are used mainly as pantry and closet doors or to hide a washer and dryer in a makeshift laundry room. The doors come in a wide variety of decorative designs, and they range from inexpensive hollow-core doors to solid and semi-solid wood doors. Bifold doors, which can enhance the space in any small home, are easy to install.

Instructions

  1. Installing the Hardware

    • 1

Tap the upper pivot pin with the hammer into the predrilled hole at the top of the door closest to the door frame.

    • 2

Insert the guide for the track with the hammer into the predrilled hole at the top of the door opposite the pivot pin.

    • 3

Place the lower pivot pin into the predrilled hole at the bottom of the door and gently tap it securely into place with the hammer.

    Installing the Track

    • 4

Position the track in the opening, open side down, with the bracket end on the side of the door frame.

    • 5

Center the track in the opening of the door frame and ensure that there is at least 3/4 of an inch between the track and the front edge of the frame.

    • 6

Attach the track to the top of the door frame, using long screws, through the track’s predrilled holes. You might have to use a drill to secure the screws to the top of the door frame if there are no predrilled holes in the frame.

    Installing the Floor Bracket

    • 7

Place the floor bracket securely on the floor or carpet in line with the track at the top of the door frame.

    • 8

Hang a carpentry tool called a plumb bob, or a weighted string, from the center of the track at the top of the door frame all the way to the floor bracket. This aligns the pivot hole in the floor bracket and ensures that the doors are straight, or plumb, when installed.

    • 9

Draw an outline of the bracket, using a pencil or chalk, to mark its exact location on the floor or carpet.

    • 10

Screw the floor bracket to the door frame and to the floor with a long flat head screw.

    Mounting the Doors

    • 11

Lift the door and place the upper pivot pin in the bracket hole. Then place the guide in the track. If you have a slide guide in the track, place the guide in the middle of the slide guide.

    • 12

Gently lift the door a little and position the lower pin in the lower bracket on the floor.

    • 13

Measure from the door frame to the edge of the bifold door at the top of the door and ensure that there is a 1/4-inch space between them. If the lower pivot pin is an adjustable screw, you might have to turn that screw to adjust the height of the door. This prevents the pivot pin and the door from falling out of the top bracket.

    Door Aligners and Knobs

    • 14

Attach door aligners if mounting two sets of bifold doors in the door frame (a total of four doors). You will need these to keep both sets of doors aligned and closed. Attach them while standing inside the closet. Position each door aligner at least 6 inches up from the floor, and then screw them into each door.

    • 15

Step outside of the closet and close both sets of doors.

    • 16

Check that both sets of doors are aligned and that the door aligners are catching each other. If the doors are not aligned and the door aligners are not catching, adjust as needed.

    • 17

Install the door knobs in the center of the two doors closest to the middle by drilling a hole slightly larger than the screw. From the inside of the closet door, place the screw in the hole. Tighten the knobs onto each screw.
