How to Remove Zinsser SureGrip

Zinsser SureGrip is a starch-based adhesive for Type 1 wallpaper and other wallcoverings. Zinsser SureGrip is suitable for use with special and delicate wallpapers, nonwoven coverings, and fabrics. SureGrip is mixed with cold water at ratios appropriate to the variety of wallcovering per manufacturer's instructions. The standard 8-ounce container of SureGrip powder covers 500 square feet of wall space. Adhesive on surfaces can be cleaned up with warm water. Zinsser recommends either a standard dry- or wet-strip process to release wallcoverings adhered with SureGrip.

Instructions

  1. Dry Strip

    • 1

Dry strip nonwoven or fabric-backed wallcoverings.

    • 2

Lift a corner of the wallpaper with the blade of a putty knife or small scraper.

    • 3

Pull the paper away from the wall at a shallow angle. Pulling the paper straight out from the wall may tear it.

    • 4

Examine the wall surface at intervals to make sure peeling the paper is not damaging the wall surface.

    • 5

Continue peeling until all paper is removed.

    Wet Strip

    • 6

Wet strip paper-backed wallcoverings to dissolve SureGrip before peeling.

    • 7

Fill a spray bottle with a mixture of hot water and a commercially available wallpaper removal product.

    • 8

Spray a small test area of wallpaper, and allow the mixture to soak in for 15 minutes. If the wallcovering is sufficiently porous, the SureGrip will dissolve. Peel the wallcovering away.

    • 9

Score the wallcovering with a scoring tool or hacksaw blade, if the wallpaper is not sufficiently porous to allow the removal solution to penetrate and dissolve the SureGrip. Wait 15 minutes, then peel or scrape away the wallcovering.
