How to Secure a Dresser the Wall for Childproofing

Securing a dresser to the wall is an important childproofing measure to prevent it from tipping over and causing injury. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

1. Gather Tools and Materials:

- Measuring tape

- Level

- Pencil

- Stud finder

- Phillips-head screwdriver or power drill

- Appropriate mounting hardware (screws and wall anchors or lag bolts)

- Safety goggles

2. Choose a Secure Wall:

Select a wall that is solid and has at least one stud where you can mount the brackets. Avoid mounting the dresser to drywall without a stud as it may not be strong enough to support the weight.

3. Locate the Studs:

Use the stud finder to locate the studs in the wall where you plan to mount the brackets. Mark their locations with the pencil.

4. Measure and Mark the Bracket Positions:

Place one bracket against the back of the dresser, positioning it near the top and in line with the stud(s). Use the level to ensure the bracket is straight and horizontal. Mark the bracket's screw hole locations on the wall using the pencil.

5. Drill Pilot Holes (if needed):

Depending on your mounting hardware and wall type, you may need to drill pilot holes for the screws. Use the appropriate size drill bit and mark the pilot hole depths with painter's tape to ensure you don't drill too deeply.

6. Install Wall Anchors (if necessary):

For drywall or hollow walls, you will likely need to use wall anchors to create a secure hold for the screws. Insert the anchors into the drilled holes and tap them in with a hammer until flush with the wall.

7. Attach the Brackets:

Align the brackets with the marks on the wall and insert the provided screws. Tighten the screws firmly using the screwdriver or power drill.

8. Mount the Dresser:

Lift the dresser and carefully place it against the wall, aligning the bracket holes with the screws. Fasten the dresser to the wall by tightening the screws until snug.

9. Test the Security:

Gently shake and push the dresser to ensure it is securely attached to the wall. It should not move or wobble.

10. Hide and Label:

If possible, cover the screw heads or brackets with adhesive covers to prevent children from accessing the hardware. Label the covers discreetly so you know where the screws are located for future adjustments or removal.

Remember, it is important to use the appropriate mounting hardware based on the type of wall and dresser you have. Always follow the instructions provided with the mounting hardware for the best and safest results. If you have any doubts about your ability to properly secure the dresser, consider seeking professional help.
