Craftsman-style roof brackets are a great way to add a touch of architectural detail to your home. They’re relatively easy to build and can be customized to fit your specific needs.
* 2×6 lumber
* 1×4 lumber
* 1/2-inch plywood
* Wood screws
* Wood glue
* Miter saw
* Circular saw
* Drill
* Sander
* Tape measure
* Pencil
1. Cut the lumber to size.
* Cut the 2×6 lumber into the following lengths:
* 4 pieces at 16 inches long
* 4 pieces at 12 inches long
* Cut the 1×4 lumber into the following lengths:
* 4 pieces at 12 inches long
* 4 pieces at 8 inches long
2. Assemble the brackets.
* Start by attaching the 12-inch pieces of 2×6 lumber to the 16-inch pieces of 2×6 lumber with wood screws.
* Next, attach the 12-inch pieces of 1×4 lumber to the 16-inch pieces of 2×6 lumber with wood screws.
* Finally, attach the 8-inch pieces of 1×4 lumber to the 12-inch pieces of 2×6 lumber with wood screws.
3. Sand the brackets.
* Use a sander to smooth out any rough edges on the brackets.
4. Finish the brackets.
* You can finish the brackets with paint, stain, or varnish.
5. Install the brackets.
* Hold the brackets in place on the roof and mark the locations of the mounting holes.
* Drill pilot holes at the marked locations.
* Drive wood screws through the pilot holes and into the rafters.
* If you’re not sure what size brackets you need, measure the width of your roof and then divide that number by 2. This will give you the length of the 16-inch pieces of 2×6 lumber.
* You can also customize the brackets by changing the width of the 1×4 lumber.
* If you don’t have a miter saw, you can use a circular saw to cut the lumber to size.
* Be sure to wear safety glasses when working with power tools.
