How-to Apply Faux Glaze

Faux glazes can be used on interior walls in the living room, kitchen, bathrooms, hallways, bedrooms or other rooms to create a custom look in the home. A faux glaze is usually mixed with standard wall paint and causes the paint to dry at a slower rate. This gives the painter added time to create faux finishes on the surface that is being painted. Water-based or acrylic glazes are usually recommended since they put out less odor than oil-based glazes and are generally safer to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a light shade of paint for the base coat and a darker shade to mix with the faux glaze. Have the paint store mix up 1 gallon of the lighter shade paint and 1 quart of paint in the darker shade.

    • 2

Paint a coat of the lighter color onto all the walls you are painting, using the paint roller. Let the paint dry for a minimum of six hours or overnight if possible.

    • 3

Mix the quart of darker paint with the gallon of faux glaze in a bucket and stir with a mixing stick until blended well.

    • 4

Dip a sponge, preferably a sea sponge, into the paint-and-glaze mixture and dab it with an old towel to remove excess paint.

    • 5

Blot the wall with the sponge in random places all over the walls, reapplying paint to the sponge when needed, until all of the walls are covered in glaze.

    • 6

Wait for the paint to dry for a minimum of six hours or overnight if possible.
