How to Reset Spring Loaded Regulators

Spring-loaded regulators are used to regulate pressure for pressure vessels or other pressurized flow systems. These are commonly found on air and gas tank valves. The spring is calibrated to open or close when a vessel's pressure limit reaches its maximum or minimum. Once the spring changes position, it must be reset. As many different models of regulators are used, the reset process will correspondingly vary but does contain universal steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the flow of gas or air to the regulator. Ensure that the valve is completely closed.

    • 2

Unscrew the regulator from the valve. This may require an adjustable wrench although some can be unscrewed by hand.

    • 3

Open the regulator reset chamber. This is typically a bolt located at the top or center of the regulator that is turned counterclockwise.

    • 4

Unscrew the nut from the bolt slowly and listen for the spring to contact the bolt. Once the spring has been uncompressed, replace the nut and screw the bolt back down. Replace the regulator back on the valve.
