How to Remove and Install Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is manufactured to withstand the elements. Over time, a piece may crack or chip off, and you will need to replace it. Replacing a few strips of vinyl siding is a project any homeowner can take on since it is the easiest type of siding to remove and replace. Vinyl siding works by interlocking with the pieces above and below it. However, this does not mean you need to remove all of the strips surrounding the damaged strip. A special zip tool is used to unhook the siding strips and allows you to replace them individually.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a zip tool over the piece of siding you need to remove. Push the zip tool underneath the piece of siding you are leaving in place. Slide the zip tool down the siding to separate it from the piece being removed.

    • 2

Lift the loosened piece of siding up gently to expose the nails that hold the damaged piece of siding to the house. Use a claw hammer to pull the nails out. Give the damaged piece of siding a quick downward yank to remove it from the house.

    • 3

Measure the length of the area that the damaged siding covered. Subtract 1/4-inch from this measurement to allow for the new siding to expand and contract. Transfer this measurement onto a new piece of siding. Cut the siding to this length with tin snips.

Lift the new piece of siding up to the house. Set it in place and wrap the hooked bottom over the lip on the piece of siding below the new piece. Push up and in to lock the new siding in place. Tug down gently on the new siding to ensure it is secure.

    • 5

Hold a nail in the center of one of the siding's nail holes. Hammer the nail in far enough that it holds the siding against the house but still allows the siding to slide back and forth. Repeat with more nails spaced every 16 inches down the length of the siding.

Hook the loose piece of vinyl siding that you unhooked in Step 1 underneath the zip tool's hook. Pull the zip tool down so the siding's hook curves under the new siding's lip near the upper edge. Begin on one end and work your way to the other end.
