How to Install Vinyl Siding & Skirting

Vinyl is a common type of siding material. Vinyl siding helps provide insulation and protection from the elements. In addition to vinyl siding along the exterior walls, many manufactured homes and mobile homes also have vinyl skirting along the lower edges. The vinyl skirting around your home fulfills a number of purposes. It can help reduce your heating bills in the winter, it hides the plumbing from view and it helps keep animals out of the area beneath your home.

Instructions

  1. Skirting Installation

    • 1

Draw a guideline for your skirting by using a 4-foot carpenter’s level. Hold the level vertical with the exterior wall of your home, marking the area directly below the outside wall all the way around your home, making a perimeter guide by placing marks in the soil every 5 feet with spray chalk.

    • 2

Lay the bottom channel along the guideline. Hold it in place by nailing it into the soil with skirting spikes every 5 feet.

    • 3

Attach the skirting backing onto the bottom of your home using the 1-inch long hex-head screws included in the skirting kit. Place the screws every 2 feet.

    • 4

Measure and cut the vinyl siding panels to fit. Attach these panels over the skirting backing by snapping them into the skirting backing at the top of the panels and into the channel strip along the bottom of the panels. Clip the backer cover over the skirting backing and skirting to hold everything firmly in place.

    Siding Installation

    • 5

Install a piece of vinyl siding starter strip along the bottom of all your exterior walls, placing each strip just above the top of the skirting. Hammer the strip in place with specific size of siding nails recommended by the manufacturer. This small strip helps hold the bottom piece of vinyl siding at a slight outward angle, directing the flow of water away from the skirting and area around your home.

    • 6

Install the included vinyl trim pieces around the corners, windows and doors, measuring them to fit these angles and openings. These little pieces of trim snap into the siding and help hold the vinyl pieces in place around windows, doors and corners.

    • 7

Snap the bottom piece of vinyl siding in place by hooking the bottom groove against the bottom trim and pulling upward until it catches. Place nails in the grooves along the top of the siding. Snap the next piece of siding in place by overlapping it 2 to 3 inches over the edge of the first piece of siding. Continue installing the siding in this manner, cutting out the areas for windows and doors.

Attach a strip of under-sill trim along the underneath edge of the eave to help hold the top piece of siding in place.
