How to Seal an Attic From a Leak in the Roof

Your home’s roof protects you, your belongings and your home’s structure from damage resulting from exposure to the elements. Determining the source of a leak can be puzzling because a trickle of water can follow a slanted rafter quite a distance before it drips to the attic floor. In some cases, the trickle can travel all the way down a rafter and run down a sidewall before it emerges as a small puddle on the main floor. Water and wood don’t mix, so even a small leak is a red flag. It’s essential to locate and repair the leak quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace a missing shingle by loosening the shingle above it with a flat bar and removing the base of the old, torn shingle before slipping a new shingle in its place and attaching it with roofing nails.

    • 2

Examine attic vents for missing pieces. High winds can damage turbine vent fins or blow static attic vent covers completely off.

    • 3

Remove worn caulking that has pulled away from the base of vent pipes and replace it with 100 percent silicone caulking to seal leaks caused by deteriorating caulking.

    • 4

Call a roofing contractor if leaking occurs around a chimney or in a roof valley with no visible cause. Flashing and counter flashing leaks result from faulty roof installation or the use of cheap metal flashing that rusts and corrodes.
